Dr. Omar Herrera

Dr. Herrera was born in Mexico City and he completed his Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (2004). He worked at the Instituto de Investigaciones Eléctricas from 2004 to 2005 under the supervision of Dr. Ulises Cano. He then went to Canada where he obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (2011). His graduate research included work in electrochemistry and fuel cell technology.

Before completing his Ph.D. degree, he started collaborating with a biotech company (ATS Biotech) and became the VP of Research and Development, where he developed products for wound healing and the sports industry. He then led the manufacturing plant in Indiana, U.S.A., as the VP of Operations and General Manager. Dr. Herrera then went back to Vancouver to work at Heliocentris Energy Systems, Inc. where he focused on sales, business and product development.

Dr. Herrera joined UBC in 2015 as the Program Manager for Transportation Futures hosted at the Clean Energy Research Centre. His work there ranges from carbon capture and fuel generation to policy implications of new transportation systems.
