CITY OF GUANAJUATO

The city of Guanajuato is located in the central part of Mexico, at approximately 2,050 m altitude and is the capital of the state of Guanajuato. The city is located within a gorge surrounded by mountains. Its original name, in Tarascan language, means 'hilly place of frogs'. It has numerous gold and silver mines which have been exploited by local people for more than 500 years.

Currently, it is one of the most important colonial architecture cities in the country. Since 1972 the city of Guanajuato has hosted the
International Cervantino Festival, one of the most important cultural events in Latin America. In 1988, the historical center of the city and the adjacent mines were declared by UNESCO Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity.
